Rising Tide of Violence: Key Findings from Recent Reports

Multiple credible organizations have documented a sharp escalation in anti-LGBTQ+ violence and hate crimes over the past year, underscoring a growing global crisis for the community. According to GLAAD’s 2025 ALERT Desk Report, between May 2024 and May 2025, there were at least 932 anti-LGBTQ+ incidents tracked in the United States alone, equating to 2.5 incidents every day. These incidents range from harassment and vandalism to physical assaults, bomb threats, and, most tragically, fatalities. Of these, 84 people were injured and 10 lost their lives as a direct result of anti-LGBTQ+ violence, a sobering reminder of the risks faced by LGBTQ+ people simply for living openly.

Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People Most Targeted

A significant and troubling trend revealed by the data is the disproportionate targeting of transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming individuals. More than half of all tracked incidents (52%) specifically targeted people within these groups or cited anti-transgender rhetoric as justification. These acts include not only physical violence but also relentless harassment, threats, and public campaigns designed to intimidate and dehumanize. The report notes a 14% increase in overall anti-LGBTQ+ incidents year-over-year, with the most dramatic spikes seen in incidents against transgender people.

Legislative and Political Backdrop Fuels Hostility

This surge in violence cannot be separated from its political context. The past year has seen a wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation globally, with hundreds of bills introduced in the United States and similar efforts echoed in other countries. In the U.S., these efforts have coincided with at least four executive orders targeting transgender Americans and more than $215 million spent on political advertising attacking transgender people during the 2024 election cycle. While the majority of these bills were ultimately defeated, their introduction and the public debate surrounding them have created a climate of fear and emboldened those seeking to do harm.

Incidents targeting state and local governments, including elected officials and city council members, have risen by 57% compared to the previous year. Minnesota State Representative Leigh Finke, the state’s first openly transgender legislator, described the personal toll of this environment. While her legislative work has been both rewarding and impactful, she has faced intense harassment, threats, and lies throughout her tenure, illustrating the double-edged nature of representation for LGBTQ+ people in public life.

Impact on Education and Public Life

The hostile climate has also seeped into education, with at least 270 incidents tracked against students, teachers, professors, and librarians. These incidents, which often occur during school board meetings, have been accompanied by a wave of book bans targeting LGBTQ+ literature. More than 10,000 books were banned in the 2023-24 school year, with many of the most frequently targeted titles centering on LGBTQ+ themes and characters.

Global and Long-Term Implications

While much of the available data focuses on the United States, the trends are mirrored in other countries, where legislative crackdowns and public hostility have similarly escalated. According to the Williams Institute at UCLA, LGBTQ+ people are nine times more likely than non-LGBTQ+ people to experience violent hate crimes—a disparity that has only grown starker in recent years.

In tandem, a new GLAAD survey found that two-thirds of LGBTQ+ adults believe violence and threats will continue to rise in the coming year. This sense of vulnerability reflects not only the reality of the documented violence but also the persistent climate of fear and uncertainty facing LGBTQ+ individuals and communities.

LGBTQ+ Perspectives and Calls for Action

Advocacy groups and LGBTQ+ leaders worldwide are calling for urgent action to address this escalating crisis. They emphasize the need for stronger legal protections, increased public education campaigns to counter misinformation, and broader societal support for LGBTQ+ people. The data underscores that visibility and representation, while crucial, are not enough to guarantee safety—systemic change and sustained vigilance are necessary to stem the tide of hate and ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals can live freely and without fear.
