New Wheaties, Now With Irony:: Anti-Gay Pol Gets Box Cover Gig

Irony was added to barley and whole wheat on the list of ingredients of Wheaties when it was announced this week that U.S. congressman Aaron Schock would appear on the popular breakfast cereal's iconic box.

U.S. Congressman Aaron Schock (R - Ill.), known equally for his anti-gay voting record and flamboyant fashion sense, tweeted a photo of his soon to be released Wheaties box this week. The hard-bodied allegedly gay congressman's likeness is being used to promote a partnership between the cereal's parent company General Mills and the Campaign to End Obesity.

On Wednesday, Schock tweeted:

Campaign To End Obesity partnered with General Mills to promote healthy living. How funny is this!?!!" #ihavearrived

Perhaps "funny" isn't as apt a choice of word as "ironic" given the recent launch of the General Mills' Pride Month focused #LuckyToBe campaign centered around Lucky Charms cereal and Schock's 0% rating by the Human Rights Campaign.

Since being voted into congress in 2009, Schock has voted against adding sexual orientation to an existing hate crimes law. He was a vocal opponent of the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act and has expressed support of a federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Someone please call a brand synergist.

Adding further fuel to the irony furnace are the gay rumors that have surrounded Schock for years. In January, ' target='_blank'> EDGE reported that former CBS News correspondent Itay Hod, ostensibly outed the congressman in a lengthy post on Facebook where he called out the two-term politician on the hypocrisy of an alleged recent sexual exploit in light of his long anti-gay voting record.

"...here's a hypothetical:" Hod wrote. "what if you know a certain GOP congressman, let's just say from Illinois, is gay... and you know this because one of your friends, a journalist for a reputable network, told you in no uncertain terms that he caught that GOP congressman and his male roommate in the shower..."

In 2011, Schock appeared on the cover of Men's Health magazine.
