Our history as a culture is continuing to write itself, but it has never advanced more quickly in one direction than in recent times. This past year the LGBTQ community celebrated the most momentous instant when Marriage Equality became the law of the land, and every individual could express their committed affection and eternal love for whomever they've chosen as their partner in life. There are hundreds of stories within the last decade that brought us to this moment in time.
Among those stories and captured in the motion picture, "Freeheld" is just one story that reveals the depths of true love, dedication and devotion. Available now on Blu-ray and Digital HD, the film stars Academy Award Winner Julianne Moore who dives into the skin of one of our own community's greatest heroes. "Freeheld" is the personal story of Detective Laurel Hester (played by Moore) a decorated police officer in New Jersey who discovers late the onset of cancer.
Hester has built a home and a life with her domestic partner Stacie (played beautifully and with wonderful sensitivity by Ellen Page) but because of a technically discriminatory rule cannot leave the love of her life her well earned pension. This incites the local community who all rally to the couple's side and lean on the local governing body known as the Freeholders to bring justice to Laurel and Stacie. With cancer eating into their savings and claiming Hester's life, time is of the essence.
Based on the Academy Award Winning Documentary Short of the same name, "Freeheld" boasts a brilliant cast including Michael Shannon and Steve Carell, and will make everyone proud of taking a stance on the right side of history. The ending to this story is both mournful and celebratory and is worth experiencing by everyone regardless of which side he or she upheld. It is a true testament to what love is really all about.
The Blu-ray is packed with bonus content including the short documentary, audio commentary from the filmmakers including its stellar leading ladies, and a follow-up featurette that brings the story full circle and into our present where equality is now the law of the land. This story is about the battles that were fought and the pioneers who took action against prejudice and injustice, so future generations can be guaranteed their freedoms.
