Tweedle Farms: Redefining the Hemp Industry for the 21st Century

Hemp fabrics date back more than 10,000 years. Presidents Washington and Jefferson grew hemp. In fact, according to the Hemp Industries Association, "Americans were legally bound to grow hemp during the Colonial Era and Early Republic." The highly partisan 1937 Marihuana Tax Act squelched the industry. It was only as recently as the 2018 Farm Bill that hemp, once again, became a legally regulated industry.

Entrepreneurs big and small have jumped on the hemp train to capitalize on the beneficial properties of CBD, as well as other cannabinoids and terpenes found in the hemp plant. "Our three main goals have always been clear and simple. We offer 1. the best products we can, 2. at a fair price, 3. with unmatched customer service," says Tweedle Farms co-founder Jason Evans. The entrepreneur brings 20 years of institutional finance as well as retail ownership experience to the partnership with James Green. The two crossed paths in Oregon and became immediate friends.

Evans relocated from California, packing more than clothes and kitchenware. He was determined to transplant a CBD-specific hemp strain never before grown in Oregon. It was a risky move. How would a different climate and photosynthesis period affect growth? The gamble paid off. The clones flourished in northwest Oregon, producing floral terpenes and rich cannabinoid content.

The vertical business model came to fruition in 2016, and over the past several years, the brand has gained momentum in an increasingly discerning and crowded marketplace. At first, the pair thought of growing for the processor market. It would have been the easier move, but in his gut, Evans felt the hemp was "too good to be ground up and turned into distillate or isolate."

They built and launched a website, selling hemp flower online at a time when only a handful of retailers could be found, though none of them were growers. Tweedle Farms became America's first farm-to-table hemp and hemp flower provider.

"We're proud of being farm-to-table," says Evans. "We have ten acres and two greenhouses and indoor gardens, which is about as much as we can manage without losing the personal attention that the plants need."

Tweedle Farms has declined outside investment, buy-out and expansion offers to stay boutique and hyper-focused on quality and transparency. "From what I learned in retail, you can only do one or two things really well," says Evans.

Like others in the industry, Tweedle Farms has had to overcome misconceptions and stigma–a parallel that drew the company to two important initiatives.

Tweedle Farms' philanthropy efforts have focused on The Last Prisoner Project, a nonprofit that focuses on three key criminal justice reform initiatives: prisoner release, record clearing through clemency and expungement, and reentry programs. Recent studies have indicated that approximately 40,000 individuals are incarcerated on victimless cannabis offenses "for having engaged in conduct that in large parts of the nation is now decriminalized, partially or fully legal, and taxed, licensed, and regulated by state and local governments."

Also, the brand has embraced the LGBTQ community despite some less than enthusiastic social media comments. Evans pays them no mind, saying, "I'd rather have one customer who's all about inclusion than those who exclude."
