Jill Biden Hires Out Designer Mark D. Sikes to Refresh Her East Wing Office

First Lady Dr. Jill Biden has turned to out designer Mark D. Sikes to give her office in the East Wing of the White House a makeover, Architectural Digest reported.

The site noted that Sikes is a member of the AD100, which the publication touted as "the definitive list of the top design, decor and architecture talent creating today."

Sikes celebrated the assignment in a Feb. 21 Instagram post, AD noted.

"This is an honor of a lifetime and I am both humbled and thrilled," Sikes posted. "To create beauty has always been my passion and I've also come to realize it's my purpose."

"Thank you to The First Lady, her team and to those who came before her and those still to come," Sikes added.

The redecoration comes more than a year after President Joe Biden's inauguration – a fact touched upon in a statement from Dr. Biden's press secretary, AD noted.

"While most first ladies immediately come in and make changes to the areas where they spend the most time, Dr. Biden had not focused on this to date, between her travel across the country, teaching, and her issue portfolio," press secretary Michael LaRosa explained.

The release said that such a refresh is "customary" for first ladies, and added that Dr. Biden "spends a great deal of time in her East Wing office, and is looking forward to personalizing the space to more reflect her working style, where she can hold larger meetings and host guests."

"In line with prior practice, this project will be funded through donations to the White House Historical Association," the release added.

Ballard Designs calls the Los Angeles-based designer "a veritable renaissance man with a furniture line, fabric collection, rug collection, book, fashion line, and of course his interior design business."

"His one design rule is that a space looks like it's been created over time," Ballard Designs said.

AD detailed that Sikes, the author of two books on design, is known "for his traditional style and love of a blue and white color palette," and said that "Sikes and his projects are frequently featured in leading design publications," recalling that the designer "has also partnered with retail brands – including Hudson Valley Lighting, Schumacher, and Annie Selke – to create signature product lines."

The match of Dr. Biden and Sikes is apt, AD said, since Sikes' Instagram page pays "tribute to female power players across history, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Diana."
