Watch: Cast and Creators of "Mrs. Maisel" Talk about Lessons and Emotions in Last Season
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
As "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" heads into the fifth and final season, the stars and creators of the hit show say they wanted to satisfy fans with fabulous locations and emotional endings.
Showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino said they tried to jam in as many eyepopping locations as they could this last season.
"Go big or go home. I mean, you know, Maisel, Maisel's never been a shrinking violet show. You know, Maisel is not a 'Oh, look over there' show. Maisel's like, 'Oh, look at me!' show," Sherman-Palladino told the AP in a recent interview. "We wanted people to have a good time and we wanted to show off New York and our beloved town and how she was, it was so much a part of making her who she was. And then like, we always did want to do, like, Grand Central, we like there were there are certain things that like, 'This is it, this is our last shot, let's get it in now.' So there was, it was all of that. It was all that. It was going to be our last season. We wanted to try and really stick the landing."
Star Alex Borsetin said the friendship between her character Susie and Rachel Brosnahan's MIdge takes center stage as the story winds down.
"I think that's the one thing we all hope people take away from this show is the power of a female relationship. When you've got a woman who's got your back and–I mean, it's a love story. These people are in love with each other. It's platonic, of course, but it's just a deep and profound love and the respect they have for each other," Borsetin said. "They make each other better people."
Brosnahan says her character found a new ease as she strives to reach her goals in comedy.
"I love telling a story about a woman like Midge, and so Midge has always been confident. But one of the things I've loved about season five is that she becomes comfortable in a different way. I love watching her step into this man's world, and while we couldn't slow down–we're never allowed to slow down.," Brosnahan said. "She felt less frenetic to me, more comfortable standing her ground and on her own two feet. And it was exciting to be able to play that growth this season."
Tony Shaloub described the mixed emotions the cast felt while filming one of the last scenes.
"That scene was our last few days of shooting it because it was such a long sequence that covered at least three days. And yeah, it was, it was quite emotional and quite challenging because we did not want it do–we did not want it to end," Shaloub said. " it was so impressive how the writing and the production all came together...everybody just felt like they were in the zone." He added: "It was very emotional."."
"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" airs the first episodes of the fifth and last season on Friday (14 APRIL 2023) on Prime Video.
