Watch: Continuing LGBTQ+ Trend, Netflix Drops New 'Rustin' Trailer

For the third time in less than a week, Netflix has released a trailer for a project coming to the streamer with LGBTQ+ themes. The newest: a look at the upcoming biopic "Rustin," about the Black civil rights pioneer who might have been erased from history despite his significant contributions because he was gay.

Describing the trailer, People Magazine wrote that it features "'Euphoria' actor Domingo, 53, as Bayard Rustin, the man who worked as one of the main organizers for the August 1963 March on Washington."

In the trailer, Rustin is "searching for allies in his plans to enact a large-scale march on Washington, D.C.," People Mag said, but he's "finding hesitancy in older Black activists and enthusiasm from younger people – especially when he announces Martin Luther King Jr. (Aml Ameen) will participate in the march."

"When it comes to the old guard," Domingo's Rustin notes, "I'm considered a pariah."

Indeed, one of the "old guard" – Roy Wilkins, played by Chris Rock – proclaims at a meeting, "Every person at this table will be in the line of fire because of him."

And the reason? Presumably, because Bayard Rustin was gay – and not shy about it. "Why is everyone so obsessed with what I'm doing, and with whom?" the activist wonders aloud, posing a question that LGBTQ+ people continue to puzzle over to this day.

A clip shortly after that moment shows another man grabbing Rustin's jaw, turning his face, and kissing him. After that, Rustin hears a warning that the police in the nation's capitol will be mobilized against marchers seeking justice and equality under the law.

As the trailer heads to its conclusion, Rustin declares, "We are committed to altering the trajectory of this country towards freedom. That's what's on the line – nothing less."

Netflix noted that "Rustin" will be released in theaters Nov. 3 before the film premieres on the streamer Nov. 17. Awards buzz has already started up around the movie, particularly for the performance of openly gay actor Colman Domingo in the title role.

The new "Rustin" trailer follows Netflix's release of a trailer for the upcoming seventh season of LGBTQ+-heavy teen drama "Elite," as well as a teaser for the third and final season of the gay romance series "Young Royals."

The trailer also follows the release of a teaser for the film that dropped on the 60th anniversary of the historic 1963 second March on Washington. A press release for the teaser noted, "Bayard Rustin was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known. He challenged authority, never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down."

The release added: "He made history, and in turn, he was forgotten."

Not anymore. Watch the new "Rustin" trailer below.
