Watch: Pete Buttigieg Mulls Inviting Anti-LGBTQ+ Speaker Johnson to See 'The Love of God' is Present in his Home Life

Pete Buttigieg told "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert he might invite the new Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, who has made a career of attacking same-sex families, to see his own family life and understand that "nothing about that is dark," The Wrap reported.

Quite the contrary: Buttigieg told Colbert that Johnson would have a chance to see how "the love of God" is part and parcel of their daily life.

"Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg takes the high road when asked if he can work with, and potentially dine with, the wildly anti-LGBTQ Speaker of the House," the description of the five-and-a-half-minute clip on YouTube says.

At two minutes and 48 seconds into the clip, Colbert notes, "When we last talked, Mike Johnson was not Speaker of the House. Now Mike Johnson is Speaker of the House. Now, his record on LGBTQ issues is – what's the word? – awful."

After a brief burst of audience laughter, Colbert continued, "So, how do you work with a guy who argued that same-sex relations are, quote, 'a dark harbinger of chaos and sexual anarchy that could doom even the strongest republic?'"

That baseless claim isn't the worst of Johnson's anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric. As The Wrap noted, "Johnson is way beyond mere opposition to gay marriage. In a 2003 newspaper editorial in his home state of Louisiana, Johnson called homosexuality 'inherently unnatural' and a 'dangerous lifestyle' that should be outright banned."

"Johnson went on to write that states 'have many legitimate grounds to proscribe same-sex deviate sexual intercourse,'" The Wrap added.

Soon after being elevated to Speaker of the House, Johnson doubled down on his inflammatory rhetoric, telling Sean Hannity, "Go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it – that's my worldview."

Added Johnson, "That's what I believe, so I do not apologize for it."

Ironically for someone who suggested that same-sex committed couples pose a threat to America, Mike Johnson has been a proponent of Donald Trump's lies regarding the 2020 election, which Trump falsely insists – against all evidence, much of it from Republican officials – was stolen from him.

UK newspaper the Daily Mail noted in a recent article that Johnson "opposed the certification of the 2020 presidential election results and took the lead in filing a brief in a lawsuit that sought to overturn Biden's victory."

"The congressman was also a member of Trump's impeachment defense team."

Responding to Colbert's question, Buttigieg sighed and then gave an answer that spoke to consummate professionalism and dedication to the oath of office.

"Look, I'll work with anybody who can help us get good transportation available to the American people," Buttigieg said. "I don't know, maybe we'll just have him over, because our little house isn't that far from the Capitol," the out official added.

Then Buttigieg offered a description of the ordinary, everyday family life of two dads with with young children: "And if he could see what it's like when I come home from work and Chasten is bringing the kids home from day care, or vice versa, and one of us is getting the mac and cheese ready and the other one is microwaving those little freezer meatballs that are a great cheat code if you've got toddlers and you've got to feed them quickly, and they won't take their shoes off, and one of them needs their diaper changed... everything about that is chaos, but nothing about that is dark."

"The love of God is in that house," Buttigieg added, as cheers and applause from the audience rang out.

"Well, too bad for Mike Johnson, and great for everybody else," Colbert said after a pause during which he appeared to be visibly moved, "same-sex marriage is legal, it's Constitutional, it's thriving."

"And, in fact," Colbert added, producing a black-and-white portrait of Buttigieg and his husband, "you and Chasten recently celebrated your fifth wedding anniversary this summer."
