The Good, the Bad, and the Bold of Golden Globes Fashion
Christopher Ehlers READ TIME: 23 MIN.
On Sunday, Hollywood's enduring shit show–The Golden Globe Awards–were held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel, bringing out all the stars for what has long been one of glitziest, booziest evenings of awards season.
The Globes, presented by the embattled Hollywood Foreign Press Association, appear to be in decent shape despite having been in flux for a few years given criticism and boycotts over the group's lack of diversity. This year, on a new network for the first time in nearly twenty years, the ceremony wasn't without a bit of controversy, namely over their decision to shelve the Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett Awards in favor of two new awards: Best Performance by a Stand-Up Comic and the ultra-useless Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award. The biggest let down, however, was host Jo Koy, whose horribly unfunny jokes didn't work and seemingly horrified attendees.
And while the awards themselves were mostly predictable, the red carpet this year was anything but. One of the most refreshing things about this year's red carpet is that men are becoming more and more adventurous with their looks, a far cry from when any red carpet used to include little more than men in variations of a tuxedo.
There were also some really bold choices that paid off, and some that didn't, that deserve their own shoutout for being, if nothing else, different. Here are our picks for the good, the bad, and the bold at this year's Golden Globe Awards:
The Good
Charles Melton
The breakout star of "May December" was a first time nominee this year, and he certainly lived up to his reputation as one of the sexiest new stars.
Emma Stone
Always poised, funny, and lovable, Emma Stone looked perfect as she accepted her trophy for "Poor Things."
John Krasinski
We've never been one to fawn over Mr. Emily Blunt, but this look had us doing a double take. Consider us a fan.
Meryl Streep
Some may think she may have looked a little too much like Liza Minnelli meets Alexander Hamilton, but it's a winning combination if we do say so ourselves.
Timothée Chalamet
We were entirely ready to dismiss this look as yet another no shirt suit look, but he killed it with this one, down to the necklace.
Jeremy Allen White
There's no way that the new face of Calvin Klein was going to show up looking drab, and he certainly didn't disappoint in this custom Calvin Klein suit. The sheer shirt underneath, paired with the high-waisted trousers, had us drooling.
Matt Bomer
He never misses. Ever.
Ryan Gosling
Gosling may have lost the trophy for his performance of Ken in "Barbie," but he rightly earned the title of best dressed last night.
Colman Domingo
A nominee for "Rustin" in addition to co-starring in "The Color Purple," this is going to be a busy awards season for the stage and screen vet, and he showed up in a big way.
The Bad
Billie Eilish
On one hand, the fact that Billie Eilish doesn't give a fuck what people think is one of her best qualities. But...she could have done a little better than this boarding school-meets-safari ensemble. We dig the shoes though, which he actually purchased herself from a thrift shop.
Helen Mirren
It's safe to say at this point that Helen Mirren is one of Hollywood's least fashionable stars, love her as we might.
