For the Record: The Brat Pack
Kevin Taft READ TIME: 3 MIN.
From their glory days in the cramped tiny bar of a much bigger restaurant that later became Rockwell: Table & Stage, to their residency at the West Hollywood nightclub DBA, to their stints in Las Vegas, Norwegian Cruise Lines, and LA's Wallis Theatre, the "For the Record" folks have never stopped creating their brand of theatrical magic. That said, it's been a long time since they went back to their roots; performing an electrifying show to packed audiences in a cozy venue where you become intimately one with the performers.
The theatrical production company that utilizes the soundtracks of your favorite classic movies has set up shop in the '80s bar Break Room 86 located within the LINE Hotel in Los Angeles. Already themed to the time period when all of our favorite Brat Pack movies took place, this is the perfect spot to put on a dizzying and flashy show that wows with its theatrics, choreography, musical arrangements, and of course, its cast. As soon as the bar in front of you disappears and a flashing stage takes its place, you know you're in for quite the evening. (And there's not a bad seat in the house!)
Combining all of the usual suspect '80s films together, director Anderson Davis has cleverly crafted a loving homage to a simpler time when girls liked boys, boys liked girls, and the biggest worry was if you were going to get to Prom or not. Davis and company take the standard tropes from "The Breakfast Club": the Princess, the Jock, the Basketcase, the Geek, and the Rebel and place those iconic characters into other films from the time period as well. For example, there is the story of a drum-playing tomboy in love with her best friend. While that is the plot of "Some Kind of Wonderful," For the Record has actually combined the Mary Stuart Masterson story from that film, with the Lloyd Dobler character from "Say Anything." And it works! "Pretty in Pink" meshes with "Sixteen Candles," the Geek from "The Breakfast Club" melds with the geeks from "Weird Science" as well as Ferris Bueller, and so on.
The breezy 90-minute show plays with and morphs all of your favorite characters into a sort of "new" story that honors the style of teen comedy romances that were so popular in the MTV age. With a rotating cast, you know on any night you'll get insane talent. Most are Broadway and touring company veterans and all not only act the hell out of the characters (without mimicking them), but they raise the roof off the joint with their accomplished vocals. From Kyle (the Geek) Sherman's infectious "Try a Little Tenderness" to Doug (the Principal) Kreeger's version of "Young Americans" to Emily (the Basketcase) Lopez' soul-stirring "In Your Eyes," to the James (the Rebel) Byous' "Rebel Yell" there's much to love here. Everyone gets the chance to shine. While Patrick (the Jock) Ortiz's abs and biceps might distract during his hilarious shower scene, don't let it distract you from his rendition of "True," or Parissa (the Princess) Koo's heartfelt "Changes" and rocking "We are Not Alone."
To make the night even more special, the "For the Record" peeps have gone all out to make sure it feels like high school from three decades ago. From the VHS cassette boxes that offer themed drinks such as the "Pretty in Pink Grapefruit," the "Did I Stutter?" and the "Bueller Bueller..." to the vintage-inspired lunchboxes for sale that include a PB&J from PBJLA, an apple, hostess cupcake, and a "rum-spiked" Capri Sun!
Audiences can arrive early to pre-party and even get "detention" where they are forced to go into one of the hidden karaoke rooms. Patrons are encouraged to wear '80s attire and take advantage of the free video games and the kitschy surroundings.
This is a one-of-a-kind experience that you can only get in LA. It's so nice to have the "For the Record" crew back home in an environment that spikes your energy, wraps you up in its nostalgia, and transports you back to the age of popped collars and saxophone solos. Detention is in session and I couldn't be more thrilled!
